Specially Adapted Housing Agents

Disabled veterans who are eligible for Specially Adapted Housing Grants may need some help in the process of finding a suitable home or location to build a home. The VA helps disabled veterans in many different ways, and for those that need advice and counseling for using the Specially Adapted Housing Grant there are Specially Adapted Housing Agents.

The VA Specially Adapted Housing Agents will come to the veterans home to help with all their housing needs. Some of the services they offer are:

  • Once the veteran has applied for the grant and are approved, they will receive a notice of eligibility.
  • A VA Specially Adapted Housing Agent will visit the veteran in their home and counsel them on the process of obtaining the grant and how they can use it to make their home accessible and retain a certain level of independence with their disability.
  • The veteran will receive a supplemental application form to fill out.
  • Once the grant is approved upon the request of the veteran, the veteran will get a commitment letter explaining conditions of the grant money and how it is disbursed.
  • A VA Specially Adapted Housing Agent will help the veteran find a lot, a builder, an architect, and help the veteran to find financing. These agents specialize in helping disabled veterans and will offer their services in every area of the housing process.
  • They offer direct loans for disabled veterans who can not find financing in other places, and need more money than the grant for their housing needs. These direct loans can be up to $33,000.

With all of the services available to disabled veterans through the VA Specially Adapted Housing Agents, veterans should have a smooth transition into a more independent way of living in a home that has been built or modified to suit their individual needs.
